DEA missed that deadline but promised to have the guidance to OMB in December. The agency seems to have missed that self-imposed deadline, too: The rule does not appear to be under OMB’s regulatory review, and a DEA spokesperson would not clarify the status for POLITICO despite multiple requests.
… It’s yet another setback for doctors like Bruce Bassi, who works for virtual practice TelepsychHealth. He gets frequent requests from recovery facilities and patients in remote areas asking if he can treat them for substance use virtually. “But my response is always, ‘no maybe soon.’ It’s pretty disappointing.”
Many patients are looking for buprenorphine, a treatment for opioid use disorder. “They’re so desperate at this point,” Bassi said. “I think there should be a sense of urgency” at DEA, he added.”
