How do I choose between IOP vs PHP?

Intensive outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization (PHP) programs are outpatient services offered to adults that are group based. These groups offer skills to enhance day-to-day coping, which allows for better management of symptoms. IOP/PHP programs offer more support to patients with mood and personality disorders as well as those with severe mental illnesses by utilizing a multi-disciplinary treatment approach. Some of the services offered include an in-depth evaluation, treatment, and post-treatment planning, as well as medication management services.

What is the approach of IOP and PHP?

Treatment in both IOP/PHP programs emphasizes mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies, which include dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT). Other approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Although IOP/PHP programs do have similarities, there are distinct criteria for each program.

How do I know if PHP is right for me?

Individuals who enroll in PHP are in need of a higher level of care to help manage symptoms. Sometimes, PHP programs are used as a transition from/alternative to full-time in-patient care at a hospital or residential facility in situations where safety and structure may be a concern. Typically, these programs are Monday through Friday and last anywhere between 6 and 8 hours a day. Group sizes can be fairly small in order to give patients the attention they need.

How do I know if IOP is right for me?

Individuals can be sent to IOP directly or this program can be used as a step down from PHP. Individuals who qualify for IOP directly have less severe symptoms and are able to maintain/uphold structure and safety without great cause for concern. Typically these programs are 3 days a week and last around 3 hours a day. Group sizes are fairly small as well, but slightly larger than a PHP.

How do I enter an IOP or PHP program?

The referral process for both types of programs begins with a call from a healthcare provider or even the individual requesting treatment. Once the initial call takes place, insurance benefits are verified, and then an intake assessment is completed. Depending on the outcome of the assessment, the patient is then admitted to the program.
