Hey Minnesota. Having treated patients in Minnesota for the past five years I can safely say Minnesotans are some of the kindest most generous people I can also say that they often have difficulty in finding a psychiatrist to no fault of their own Minnesota has 59 Health shortage areas which make up about 38% of the state. Also getting through Winters in Minnesota is really rough. So if you’re located in Minnesota and have Preferred One,
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, United Healthcare, Optum or Cigna or Aetna please feel free to reach out we’d be happy to talk to you and set up an appointment. Thanks a lot.
According to data collected by Merritt Hawkins, Minnesota has 8.18 psychiatrists per 100,000 people. This ranks 21st in the country, and after Alaska (which has 8.92) and below the national average of 9.35. Minnesota has a total of 456 psychiatrists in the state, and 59 health shortage areas, with 38.4% unmet needs in the state. It would take 30 psychiatrists in the state to remove the HPSA designation. Put in other words, each psychiatrist in Minnesota treats on average 10,901 Minnesotans.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, approximately 12% of drug and alcohol counselors in the state are 65 or older (source). More than half of Minnesota psychologists are 55 years and older (source).

Rules and Regulations for psychiatrists in Minnesota
In Minnesota, just like every other state, any clinician providing services to a patient located in Minnesota must be licensed by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice.
Telemedicine may be provided by means of real-time two-way, interactive audio and visual communications, including the application of secure video conferencing or store-and-forward technology to provide or support health care delivery, which facilitate the assessment, diagnosis, consultation, treatment, education, and care management of a patient’s health care.
“Telemedicine [according to CMS] is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another using interactive telecommunications equipment that includes, at a minimum, audio and video equipment permitting two-way, real time, interactive communication between the patient and physician or practitioner at the distant site to improve a patient’s health.”
According to the Minnesota Telemedicine Act of 2018,
Any plan sold after Jan 1, 2017 must include coverage for telemedicine
A health carrier cannot exclude any coverage solely because the service is provided via telemedicine.
A health carrier must reimburse the healthcare provider for covered services delivered via telemedicine on the same basis and at the same rate as in person services.
