Telehealth is an established path to psychiatric care in Florida
Under Florida Statutes § 456.47, a licensed telehealth provider may perform a patient evaluation and treat patients through synchronous (real-time video) technology, and is not required to conduct a prior in-person physical exam when the telehealth evaluation is sufficient to diagnose and treat. The law requires telehealth providers to practice consistent with the same prevailing professional standard of practice that applies to in-person care.

Some Medicaid behavioral services still require in-person care
After the COVID-19 public health emergency ended, Florida Medicaid clarified that only a defined set of community behavioral health services stays eligible for telehealth — psychiatric evaluation, bio-psychosocial and functional assessments, medication management, medication-assisted treatment, and individual and family therapy — while other community behavioral health services must be delivered in person. Evaluation, medication management, and therapy remain fully available online.

As of December 2025, Florida had 239 federally designated Mental Health Care Health Professional Shortage Areas, and only about 25% of the state's estimated need for psychiatrists was being met (HRSA).
