Hello Illinois, the Land of Lincoln. It’s a beautiful (state) countryside and Illinois has great cities like Chicago obviously that attracted me to live there a few years ago. While I loved getting to know the people of Illinois and taking advantage of the incredible opportunities, there one thing I did not like was seeing the critical need for mental health therapists and psychiatrists there. I found that many clinicians actually only take Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois leaving many patients hanging and needing to continue to call around. The people of Illinois deserve better. When I was working at Hazelden Betty Ford, Gateway Foundation, and Northwestern University, I recognized that many individuals in Illinois are highly motivated to get better if they have the right care. If you have Aetna Cigna Humana United or Optum or Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois please give us a call today, we’d be happy to see you. Thanks a lot.
Recent advancements in the state of Illinois, have made psychiatric care more accessible than ever before. New patients now have access to online psychiatrists services to help them manage their mental health disorders. This means that individuals have access to a greater variety of options when it comes to finding and receiving licensed professional help for mental health issues. Virtual sessions online provides many benefits compared to traditional in-person visits, including convenience, affordability, and accessibility.
Just like every other state, any clinician providing services to a patient, including online therapy, must be licensed by the Illinois IDFPR.
Telemedicine may be provided by means of real-time two-way, interactive audio and visual communications, including the application of secure online video conferencing or store-and-forward technology to provide
medical or support health care delivery, which facilitate the assessment, diagnosis, online consultation, treatment, education, and compassionate care management of a patient’s health care.
“Telemedicine [according to CMS] is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another using interactive telecommunications equipment that includes, at a minimum, audio and video equipment permitting two-way, real time, interactive communication between the patient and physician or practitioner at the distant site to improve a patient’s health.”
According to the Executive Order to Expand Telehealth Services, signed by Governor JB Pritzker on March 19, 2020
Beginning March 19, 2020 and continuing for the duration of the Gubernatorial Disaster proclamation, in order to protect the public’s health, and to permit expedited treatment of mental health conditions, all health insurance issuers regulated by the Department of Insurance are hereby required to cover the costs of all Telehealth Services rendered by in-network providers to deliver any clinically appropriate, medically necessary covered services and treatments to insureds, enrollees, and members under each policy, contract, or certificate of health insurance coverage.
Living in the state of Illinois comes with its own unique set of rules and regulations, but residents now have access to a new form of help: Telepsychiatry and online psychiatry services. These forms of medical services online are becoming a popular way for residents to access the mental health providers they need without having to leave their homes.
Illinois rules require that a patient-physician relationship is established for telemedicine to be practiced. Patient-physician relationships can be established through telemedicine which includes real time video conferencing.
The following services may not be conducted via telemedicine:
TelepsychhHealth is at the forefront throughout Illinois when it comes to accepted insurance plans. 4. Accessible from Rural Areas
With over 120 designated mental health shortage areas across the state, many Illinois residents have limited access to psychiatric services. TelepsychHealth helps close that gap by bringing expert care directly to your device.
According to data from Merritt Hawkins, Illinois has just 8.99 psychiatrists per 100,000 residents, which is below the national average of 9.35. The state ranks 17th nationwide, and rural counties are hit the hardest. Over 30% of Illinois’ population lives in areas with unmet mental health needs, and the Behavioral Health + Economics Network (BHECON) reports that Illinois would need to triple its workforce to meet demand.
The shortage has led to long wait times and difficulty accessing care—especially for those in rural areas or without transportation. That’s where telepsychiatry plays a critical role. It offers a scalable solution that bridges the gap between mental health professionals and patients who need timely, quality care.
Telepsychiatry is a form of telemedicine that provides psychiatric evaluation, therapy, medication management, and follow-up care using secure video communication.
