What psychiatric care costs without insurance

Without insurance, psychiatric care at TelepsychHealth costs $225 for an initial evaluation with a psychiatric nurse practitioner or physician assistant, then $150 for each follow-up visit. Visits with our psychiatrist (MD) are $450 and $225, and he takes a limited number of new patients. These flat, published self-pay rates are the same in all ten states we serve. Individual therapy (Illinois, Texas and Florida only) starts at $150 a session.

What a visit costs

Self-pay (also called cash-pay or direct-pay) means one flat rate per visit, set by clinician type and the same in every state we serve. Most new patients choose a psychiatric NP or PA, or (in Illinois, Texas and Florida) a therapist, based on what you need — and your clinician can refer you across the team as your care evolves.

Your cost in writing, before care starts

Under the federal No Surprises Act, anyone who is uninsured or chooses not to use insurance has the right to a Good Faith Estimate — a written list of expected charges — before starting care. We provide one to every self-pay patient, and you can request one at any time, even before booking.

If a bill ever came in $400 or more above your Good Faith Estimate, federal law would give you the right to dispute it. In practice, our flat per-visit rates mean the estimate and the charge are the same number.

Have out-of-network benefits? Ask for a superbill — an itemized receipt with the CPT and diagnosis codes insurers require — and submit it to your plan for reimbursement toward your out-of-network deductible and benefits.

How much does a psychiatrist cost without insurance?
At TelepsychHealth, seeing a psychiatrist online without insurance costs a flat $450 for an initial psychiatric evaluation with a psychiatrist (MD), or $225 with a psychiatric nurse practitioner or physician assistant (our psychiatrist takes a limited number of new patients). Follow-up medication-management visits are $225 with a psychiatrist and $150 with an NP or PA. Individual therapy sessions are $150 with a licensed therapist, $195 with an NP or PA, and $350 with a psychiatrist, and group therapy is $45 per session for adults located in Texas or Florida. Can I see a psychiatric provider without insurance?

Why does the first visit cost more than a follow-up?
The first visit is a full psychiatric evaluation (CPT 90792): your symptoms, history, past treatment, current medications and goals, ending in a diagnosis and a treatment plan. Follow-up visits (CPT 99213 or 99214) are focused check-ins on how treatment is working, with medication adjusted as needed. That's why the evaluation is $450 with a psychiatrist or $225 with an NP or PA, and each follow-up is $225 or $150.
Why does a psychiatrist cost more than a nurse practitioner or PA?
The rates follow training. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who completed a residency in psychiatry; a psychiatric nurse practitioner or physician assistant is an advanced-practice clinician who also evaluates, diagnoses and prescribes. At TelepsychHealth both follow the same care model, and your clinician can refer you across the team as your care evolves. With an NP or PA, an initial evaluation is $225 instead of $450, and a follow-up is $150 instead of $225.
How much does a year of psychiatric care cost without insurance?
It depends on how often you're seen, which you and your clinician decide together. As an example, an initial evaluation with an NP or PA followed by a monthly follow-up for the rest of the year comes to $225 + 11 × $150 = $1,875; the same schedule with a psychiatrist comes to $450 + 11 × $225 = $2,925. Many people are seen more often while a medication is being started or changed and less often once things are stable, so ask your clinician what schedule to expect — your Good Faith Estimate puts the expected charges in writing.
Is self-pay cheaper than using my insurance?
It depends on your plan. With a copay plan we're in-network with, using insurance usually costs less per visit. With a high-deductible plan, you pay your plan's contracted rate for each visit until you meet the deductible, and those payments count toward it; self-pay visits aren't billed to your plan, so they usually don't count toward your deductible. Do these rates require payment at the time of service?
Yes — every rate on this page includes an 80% discount that is applied when payment is made at the time of service. That is how self-pay at TelepsychHealth normally works: a card is kept securely on file and charged the flat listed rate after each visit. For arrangements where payment will not be made at the time of service, a different fee schedule applies — call us at (888) 730-5220 before booking to discuss.
Can I pay with an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. Psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and psychotherapy are qualified medical expenses, so you can pay with a health savings account or flexible spending account card just like any other card.
Will my insurance reimburse me if TelepsychHealth is out of network?
Many PPO plans include out-of-network mental health benefits that reimburse part of the cost of your visits after you meet an out-of-network deductible. We provide a superbill — an itemized receipt with the procedure and diagnosis codes insurers require — that you submit to your plan. Reimbursement rules vary by plan, so check your out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits; we can't guarantee what your insurer will pay.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
A Good Faith Estimate is a written list of your expected charges that federal law (the No Surprises Act) entitles you to when you're uninsured or choose not to use insurance. We provide one before your first visit and any time you ask. Because our self-pay rates are flat per-visit prices, your estimate matches what you're actually charged.
Are there any fees besides the visit rate?
No — there are no memberships, platform fees, or setup costs. The only other charge you could ever see is a late-cancellation or missed-appointment fee, which is disclosed when you book; canceling with enough notice costs nothing.
Can I switch between self-pay and insurance later?
Yes. If you get coverage we're in-network with, we'll verify your benefits and bill your plan for visits going forward — and if you lose coverage, you can switch to self-pay without interrupting care. Call us at (888) 730-5220 and we'll sort out which path costs you less.
Does the visit price include medication?
Prescriptions are sent electronically to your pharmacy and the medication itself is billed by the pharmacy, not by us. Most first-line psychiatric medications have inexpensive generic versions, and your clinician will factor cost into what they prescribe.
Which states can I book a self-pay visit in?
All ten states we serve: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Texas. Every visit is by secure video, so you can be seen from home anywhere in your state — you need to be physically located in one of those ten states during each visit.
